Springfield Armory XDs .45 ACP – First Impressions

I finally broke down and bought the XD-S by Springfield. The “Noticeably Unnoticeable” Sub Compact that is making waves through the gun owner and CCW communities everywhere.

I haven’t shot the XD-S yet, but these are my first impressions having just obtained this little powerhouse.

I must say before I opened the case I was impressed (by the case itself). The case is bigger and more durable than any other handgun case I have owned.

The XD-S ships standard with two magazines, gun lock, allen wrench, bore brush, paddle holster, extra mag holster, extra fiber optics for the front sight and an additional smaller back-strap if needed. One factory test round was included as well.

The trigger is Springfield’s USA or Ultra Safety Assurance Action Trigger.

The USA trigger guards against accidental discharge, from dropping or bumping it, by locking the trigger in place until direct rearward pressure is applied.

The new XD-S trigger has a short travel along with a short reset which helps to keep you on target with greater ease for quicker, more accurate follow-up shots.

The finish on the XDs is Melonite, which means the metal is bathed in a salt bath nitriding process that leaves a deep, penetrating finish that protects against corrosion.

The Loaded Chamber Indicator allows the shooter to verify without a doubt, visually or by touch that there is a round in the chamber of the Springfield XDs.

The XDs is also equipped with a “grip safety” that allows firing only when the shooter has a firm grip on the pistol.

The Snag Free Sights are low profile and holster friendly. The front sight is equipped with fiber optic choice of red or green shipped with the XDs.

Sure Grasp Slide Serrations on the XD-S not only make it more attractive they are functional as well. The serrations have a slightly rounded design, extending to the top of the slide, limiting the possibility of snagging when drawing the pistol.

The XD-S has a fail-safe disassembly with a disassembly lever that cannot be manipulated with a magazine in the pistol. Additionally, a magazine cannot be inserted into the pistol.

The XD-S has a secure grip texture that is enhanced compared to the XD or XD(M) with an even more pronounced texture to ensure your grip is always secure.
A single-position Picatinny rail readily accepts lights, lasers or other accessories. It is one of the only polymer pistols of this size that has this feature.

I am anxious to see how all these features stack up at the firing range. I will post follow-up observations and possibly a video or two of the XD-S performance.
